Since September 1948, a commemorative column with the Dutch lion has been standing in the park at Oranjeplein ("Orange Square")in memory of six inhabitants of Simpelveld who were killed during the war.

Under the names of the war victims, which include members of the resistance, victims of war violence and a soldier, are the words "To those who gave their lives for our freedom". Later, the names of 17 war victims from surrounding villages were added to the monument.
