On 25 April 1945 troops of the Soviet and American armies met each other at the German town of Torgau on the Elbe River. This meeting was an important symbolic moment in the last stage of the war. Although the German army would keep fighting for a few more weeks the meeting at Torgau proved that Nazi-Germany had been thoroughly beaten.
