Liberation Route Europe in Italy
On 10 July 1943 Allied forces invaded Sicily. Two weeks later Mussolini was deposed but he would be reinstated at the head of an Italian puppet state by the Germans later on. On 3 September 1943 Allied forces landed on the Italian mainland and the Italians agreed to an armistice. The Germans responded quickly by occupying the country and taking up strong defensive positions. Heavy fighting continued in Italy until the end of the war at places such as Anzio, Salerno and Monte Casino.
