Program of the tour

Morning – Barga

Meet the guide outside the Porta Reale at Barga. Visit the splendid medieval village of Barga, site of the German, American, and Brazilian armies’ occupation and conquest. Barga was an important point, symbolically and strategically, in the geopolitics of the upper Serchio River Valley.

Lunch in Barga

Afternoon – Sommocolonia

Visit the historic hilltop hamlet of Sommocolonia, only 10 km away from Barga. The medieval village is located in a magnificent panoramic position with views of the surrounding valley. On 26 December 1944 during a German counter offensive, the village became the stage of one of the most significant war battles in the territory of Lucca. In addition to numerous civilian casualties, hundreds of soldiers perished. The Battle of Sommocolonia is historically nicknamed the “Christmas Battle” and through this battle, the Germans were able to stop the advance of the Allies for the entire winter. Nowadays it is possible to visit, all over the village, the most significant places of the battle and a little museum, formally known as the “Hall of Memory”.
