From history came a modern museum, situated between hills and woods and located in one of the most beautiful areas of the Netherlands. South-east of Nijmegen and Arnhem, history is brought back to life again at the National Liberation Museum 1944-1945.

In the museum, you live through the period preceding the war, experience the occupation, celebrate the liberation and witness the rebuilding of the Netherlands and Europe after the war. Fragrances, interactive presentations, dioramas, models, original films and sound fragments captivatingly depict the liberation. The museum shows both young and old the current value and importance of democracy, freedom and human rights.

The highlights of the museum are the model of Operation Market Garden, the air-raid shelter and Liberation Street, the diorama of the Waal crossing, the operation Veritable: the Rhineland Offensive. You can see the Honorary Dome with Roll of Honour and the Wall of Human Rights.

There are also activities and programmes like guided tours and temporary exhibitions, educational programmes for children, battlefield tours and excursions by bus or bicycle, commemorations and liberation festivals in May and September. You can also visit events, film programmes and lectures and the Canadian War Cemetery and Memorial Park.

The Liberation Museum is a historical-educational museum covering WWII, including the years leading up to the war, the period of liberation, the post-war developments and the relation of this history to current events. Through a multiperspective approach combining knowledge, experience and interaction, and looking across national borders and narratives, the museum aims to further historical awareness in relation to current issues concerning freedom, democracy and human rights. In doing so the museum contributes to the understanding of our modern society and the creation of critical citizenship.

Apart from an extensive events programme the museum also has a number of group day packages. These include a visit to the museum, lunches, visits to a vineyard, visits to the German towns of Kranenburg and Kleve, tours with the solar-powered train, a train-lorry (Draisine) or tours with historical military vehicles.

The Liberation Museum further offers educational programmes with assignments in English for primary and secondary schools. These programmes are centred on the permanent exhibition and offer students the chance to learn about the past as well as experiencing it. Students visiting the Liberation Museum take a step back in time. They hear, see, feel and smell history: the museum as an inspirational learning environment.

“The cooperation between the Liberation Museum in Groesbeek and Liberation Route Europe places the story of the liberation in a European context. Because of this visitors get a better understanding of history. Moreover, the cooperation leads to more visitors to the Liberation Museum and the various audio spots in the area. ” Dr. Wiel P.H. Lenders, director of the National Liberation Museum 1944-1945.
