Heerlen has not suffered much from the violence of war. There was a clear reason why the Americans set up a rest centre there for their own troops. After all, there was plenty to do for those who wanted to recover their breath after fighting at the frontline. There was something for everyone. American Red Cross workers, for example, established the Red Cross Club in the building of the Hema retail chain at Dr. Poelsstraat.
Due to the presence of coal mines, the city had a relatively large number of young, unmarried inhabitants, who were looking for recreation in their free time. As a result, there were already many theatres, cinemas and dance halls in Heerlen before the war. After the liberation, they prospered.
