Field Marshal Bernard Law ‘Monty’ Montgomery, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, was a senior British Army Officer who served in the First and Second World Wars.

Between 1937 and 1938, Monty was Portsmouth Garrison Commander. He saw action in Belgium and France as the British Expeditionary Force withdrew from France during the Dunkirk evacuation, also known as Operation Dynamo.

In 1942, Monty was promoted to Field Marshal. In this capacity, he led the Eighth Army during the battles of El Alamein in North Africa and the landings in Italy in 1943. He returned to the UK in January 1944 and was appointed Commander of the 21st Army Group. He then assisted in the planning and oversaw the ground offensive of Operation Overlord when the Allies landed in Normandy in June 1944.

On 4 May 1945 on Luneburg Heath, Germany, he accepted the surrender of the German forces in north-west Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands.
