Robert Capa was one of the most important reporters of the 20th century. The Troina Museum, opened in 2021, exhibits his photographs of the landing and the war in Sicily.

Robert Capa was the pseudonym of Endre Friedmann (1913 to 1965), a Hungarian Jewish naturalised American and great war reporter. He was able to immortalise the Spanish Civil War, the Second World War, and the main conflicts linked to decolonisation through his reporting.

In 1941 he was in New York, and when the US entered the war he decided to join the American army, first in Africa, then in Italy, then in France. In 1943, he parachuted into Sicily and followed the troops of the 7th Army to Palermo.

He then went to central Sicily, documenting the battle of Troina in early August. At that time, he was hired by 'Life' magazine. Among the iconic images of the Sicilian campaign is the photo he took on the road to Sperlinga, immortalising an American soldier asking a Sicilian shepherd for information. In 2015, a commemorative plaque was placed at the site of the photo, on the state road 120 in contrada Ponte Capostrà.

In the same year, the municipality of Troina hosted an exhibition about Capa in Italy, and from there launched a project to celebrate his presence on the island and the photographic heritage that resulted. With the support of the Fondazione Famiglia Pintaura, a collaboration was initiated with the International Center for Photography in New York. This led to the selection, reproduction and acquisition of the material to be exhibited. The exhibition design was entrusted to Soul Design Creative Studio.

On 1 October 2021, the Robert Capa Museum of Photography opened in the Palazzo Pretura in Troina. This exhibits the Fragments of War in Sicily collection, which consists of 62 prints from original negatives, most of which had never been seen before. They document the Sicilian campaign and the daily life of the population during the war. On the first floor are the shots of Agrigento and Palermo, on the second those of Troina. The museum also offers showcases with objects and documents, a ‘social’ wall and a bookshop.
