Camp Groot Eiland was known for indecent practices. Women and men were tied up in barns, mistreated, robbed, raped and NSB women were examined internally. After six months the camp was closed by order of the Canadians.

In February 1946, the bodies of two women suspected by the OD of colluding with the enemy were exhumed on Groot Eiland.

Debora van Es from Spui and Marie Antheunis from Axel. On Dolle Dinsdag (Mad Tuesday), September 5, 1944, they had been arrested by the OD and then disappeared without a trace.

During the search for his daughter, Marie Antheunis' father distributed pamphlets in Axel and Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. Time learned that both women had been killed by strangulation and that the suspected perpetrator Alex Rubens, with the help of Axel mayor van Oeveren, had fled to the United States.

An event with a strong hint of a cover-up, which still occupies the people of Axel and the surrounding area.
