The monument in the centre of Schinveld was erected in memory of eleven residents of the municipality of Beekdaelen. During the years of occupation, they lost their lives as a result of acts of war. The memorial also emphasises the importance of human rights, peace and freedom.
The monument was unveiled on the occasion of the 50th commemoration of the liberation of Schinveld on 18 September 1994 by Joseph Godderij, a so-called 'Engelandvaarder'. During the war, this inhabitant of Schinveld escaped to England to join the British army. He was part of the second wave of soldiers who landed on Gold Beach on 3 August 1944.
