In 1940, the population of Terezín was ejected and the garrison town turned into a Jewish ghetto and transit camp. From 1941 until the liberation on 3 May 1945, about 133.000 Jewish people were imprisoned in the camp. Some parts of the former camp now function as a museum memorialising those who lived and died there. During the Second World War, the tower of the St. Willibrordus basilica serves as a military observation post for the Germans. On the bell in the tower they inscribed ‘1940’, ‘Gott strafe England’, and a swastika. Another swastika and some writing in German can be found on one of the walls.&nbsp;During their advance through the east of Zeelandic Flanders, the Polish 1st Armoured Division fired shots at the bell tower with the intention of disabling the German observation post. Some 70 grenades hit the tower, which caught fire, almost destroying it entirely. This happened on September 18, 1944. Hulst was liberated a day later. After the war has ended, there is a lot of fuss about whether the German inscriptions and swastikas should be removed. In the end, it was decided to keep things the way they were and it now serves as a memorial.&nbsp;

Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog doet de toren van de Sint-Willibrordusbasiliek dienst als militaire observatiepost van de Duitsers. Op de grote klok in de toren hebben zij de teksten ‘1940’, ‘Gott strafe England’ en een hakenkruis aangebracht. The cemetery of La Cambe is located near Omaha Beach. With around 21.200 graves it is the largest and best known German military cemetery in Normandy. In contrast to the Allied cemeteries, the setting is simple and sober, creating a serenity that urges the living to live in peace.

Of the six German military cemeteries in Normandy, La Cambe, counting 21.200 graves, is the largest and best known. The other German cemeteries are (in order of importance): Champigny/Saint-André-de-l’Eure, Mont-de-Huines, Marigny, Orglandes and Saint-Désir-de-Lisieux. In total, the remains of 80.000 German soldiers are buried in Normandy. Some soldiers died already before the Battle of Normandy, some in captivity thereafter.

The La Cambe cemetery dates from the summer of 1944, when the U.S. Army established two temporary cemeteries on the battlefield near the village of La Cambe, one reserved for U.S. soldiers, the other for the Germans.

After the war, the American Battle Monuments Commission decided to gather the remains of the U.S. soldiers in the cemetery of Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer. In the 1950’s, the administration of German cemeteries was entrusted to the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge, a private humanitarian organization, charged by the Federal Republic of Germany with taking care of the German war dead abroad, under the motto ‘Versöhnung über den Gräbern’ (‘reconciliation above the graves’). An internationally sponsored peace park with 1.200 maple trees was completed in 2009.

Like other German military cemeteries of the two world wars, La Cambe reflects the status of the defeated. Unlike Allied cemeteries, the crosses and headstones are of a dark tone, in accordance with what the Treaty of Versailles had already established in 1919 for cemeteries of the First World War. The bucolic character of the present cemetery urges the visitors to live in peace.

These fallen soldiers were initially buried in the municipal cemetery, but by the end of 1943 plans for a memorial had begun.&nbsp;&nbsp;​In 1953, following the agreement signed in Rome between Italy and the Commonwealth, 51 war cemeteries were established on national soil, three of which were in Sicily (the other two in Catania and Agira), managed by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC).&nbsp;​​The cemetery in Syracuse contains 1059 victims of the Second World War, 134 of whom are unidentified. In addition to Commonwealth soldiers (985 British, 41 Indians, seven South Africans, five Australians, four Canadians, one New Zealander), there are also three Greek soldiers, two Dutch and six of unknown nationality. Also laid here are the ashes of several British war widows, who expressly requested to the CWGC that they be buried next to their husbands.&nbsp;​The cemetery, designed by Louis De Soissons, begins with a portico (roof over columns) with a tabernacle. Then there is the Holy Field, divided into two parallel rows of four sectors. At the back stands a large white marble Latin Cross. Inside the structure there are four monuments, one bearing the inscription 'Deemed to be buried in this cemetery' and others ‘Their glory shall never be obliterated'.&nbsp;​The tombstones, placed vertically following the typology of Anglo-Saxon cemeteries, have a Roman numeral, a capital letter and a number. These indicate respectively, the sector, row and the grave/ The name, date of death, age, symbol of the professed religion, badge of the corps and soldier's rank are also indicated.&nbsp;​​In 1955 the cemetery was visited by UK wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and in 1990 by Prince Edward Duke of Kent. Oprócz żołnierzy Wspólnoty Narodów (985 Brytyjczyków, 41 Hindusów, siedmiu Południowoafrykańczyków, pięciu Australijczyków, czterech Kanadyjczyków, jeden Nowozelandczyk), spoczywa tu także trzech żołnierzy greckich, dwóch holenderskich i sześciu nieznanej narodowości. Spoczywają tu również prochy kilku brytyjskich wdów wojennych, które wyraźnie poprosiły CWGC o pochowanie ich obok swoich mężów.Cmentarz, zaprojektowany przez Louisa De Soissons, rozpoczyna się portykiem (kolumnami przykrytymi dachem) z tabernakulum. Następnie znajduje się Święte Pole, podzielone na dwa równoległe rzędy po cztery sektory. Z tyłu stoi duży krzyż łaciński z białego marmuru. Wewnątrz struktury znajdują się cztery pomniki, jeden z napisem "Uznani za pochowanych na tym cmentarzu", a inne "Ich chwała nigdy nie zostanie zatarta".Nagrobki, umieszczone pionowo zgodnie z typologią cmentarzy anglosaskich, mają cyfrę rzymską, wielką literę i liczbę. Oznaczają one odpowiednio sektor, rząd i grób. Podano również imię i nazwisko, datę śmierci, wiek, symbol wyznawanej religii, odznakę korpusu i stopień żołnierza.W1955 r. cmentarz odwiedził premier Wielkiej Brytanii Winston Churchill, a w 1990 r. książę Kentu Edward. Cmentarz jest utrzymywany przez obywateli brytyjskich, takich jak Ian Harrison, który zorganizował tam obchody 80. lądowania w 2023 roku. The construction was finished in the early morning of September 19. Through thick fog, the Poles brought their heavy equipment across the water. In een poging om een Duits tegenoffensief richting Antwerpen te voorkomen en Terneuzen te veroveren, trokken de Poolse eenheden via Hulst op naar Axel. Daarvoor moest het Kanaal Axel-Hulst worden overgestoken. De Duitse verdediging had eerder al bruggen over het kanaal opgeblazen en grote delen van het land rond Axel onder water gezet. Guzzoni chose Colonel Emilio Faldella as his Chief of Staff and Prince Giovanni Moncada (later revealed as a British spy) as his aide-de-camp.&nbsp;​On 4 June, the decree for the militarisation of the Sicilian territory was published in the 'Gazzetta del Regno', and all powers were consequently transferred to the Military Command. The following week, Guzzoni patrolled the defences, returning dejected and pointing out the numerous shortcomings to the Central Command.&nbsp;​On 26 June, the German Generals, Kesselring and von Senger, went to Enna to meet Guzzoni, who unsuccessfully called for German reinforcements in the southeast. On the morning of 10 July at 01:09, Guzzoni decreed a state of emergency on the island but was soon subjected to the orders of the new German Commander, Hube.&nbsp;​The British General Montgomery gave Leese's XXX Corps the task of advancing along State Highway 124 Siracusana, through the Iblei mountains towards Enna, to attempt to outflank the German forces on the right and occupy the important road junction. In reality, US General Patton had Bradley's 2nd Army Corps with the 45th and 1st Divisions, advance in the direction of Enna.&nbsp;​On 16 July, the Italian retreat from Enna began. US General Terry Allen's 1st Division arrived on the morning of 20 July, slightly ahead of the British troops. In 2004, in honour of the 60th anniversary of Axel's liberation, Mario opened a private museum in his barn. On the ground floor is a museum café. This is also where many of the historical vehicles are located. On the upper floors, the collection can be admired. A foundation of volunteers runs the museum.Gdynia War Museum is located in the centre of the 1944 battlefield. The area around the barn had been flooded by the Germans to impede the Allied advance. In September 1944, four days of heavy fighting between the Polish liberators and the German occupiers took place in the area. The barn that now houses the museum was the only one to survive the shelling. The Hollandsche Schouwburg is a Jewish monument in Amsterdam. Between 1893 and 1942 it functioned as a theatre. During the war it was used as a deportation centre from which Jews were transported to Camp Westerbork en Camp Vught. From there they were deported to camps in Germany. By initiative of the Joodsche Raad children were separated from their parents when arriving at the theatre. They were brought to the crèche opposite the street. From here they managed to let six hundred children escape. Stichting Hollandsche Schouwburg bought the premise in 1947 to prevent it from being used as a theatre again. In 1958, it was decided to arrange the building as a monument. The facade of the house was renovated while the backside was mostly demolished. The hall of the theatre was turned into a courtyard where a memorial place, designed by L. Waterman, was established. In the Hollandsche Schouwburg not only an exhibition dedicated to the Holocaust can be seen, but also changing expositions.

In 1958 werd besloten om het gebouw als monument in te richten. De voorgevel van het huis werd gerestaureerd terwijl de achterzijde grotendeels werd afgebroken. Zo veranderde de schouwburgzaal in een binnenplaats waar een gedenkplaats werd opgericht, ontworpen door L. Waterman. In de Hollandsche Schouwburg zijn, naast een vaste expositie over de Jodenvervolging, wisselende tentoonstellingen te zien. On the afternoon of September 2, Task Force Y, coming from Maubeuge, lost two Sherman tanks, destroyed by anti-tank fire and probably at least one Panzerfaust shot. These were the first two American tanks destroyed in Belgium. The column held the crossroads for around two hours, while an infantry company cleared the area west of the causeway. Task Force Y then took to the road again towards Mons, reaching Hyon at 6:30 p.m. and reaching the bivouac area between Mesvin and the Héribus slag heap at 7:30 p.m. D’une part, la retraite allemande s’y écoule du Borinage vers Binche et vers Charleroi puis l’Allemagne. Aan de ene kant stroomde de Duitse terugtocht vanuit de Borinage, een gebied in de Waalse provincie Henegouwen in België, richting Binche, Charleroi en Duitsland. Aan de andere kant passeerden de Amerikaanse troepen van het VII Corps op weg naar Bergen. Een ontmoeting tussen de twee was onvermijdelijk.In de namiddag van 2 september 1944 verloor Task Force Y, komende van Maubeuge, twee Sherman tanks die door antitankvuur werden vernietigd en ten minste één Panzerfaust werd neergeschoten. Dit waren de eerste twee Amerikaanse tanks die vernietigd werden in België. Dances and folk games were spontaneous expressions of relief and adherence to the House of Orange. On their march through the Netherlands to the cities of the west, Canadian troops, soldiers of the Belgian Brigade Piron and the Dutch Stoottroepers were received jubilantly as liberators. Soldiers of the Belgian Brigade Piron were welcomed and cheered as liberators in Buren. The photo shows a truck leaving the town via the bridge over the Korne River. In the background the flags in the Peperstraat and the tower of St. Lambert's Church. The "liberation" of Buren was done by soldiers of the Brigade Piron to which some tanks of a Canadian unit were added. Some German troops were in Buren still after their official surrender, sometimes until May 9th.

Im Hintergrund die Fahnen in der Peperstraat und der Turm der St. Lambertus-Kirche. Die "Befreiung" von Buren wurde von Soldaten der Brigade Piron durchgeführt, zu der auch einige Panzer einer kanadischen Einheit gehörten. Rondedansen en volksspelen waren spontane uitingen van opluchting en aanhankelijkheid aan het Huis van Oranje. Bij hun tocht door Nederland naar de steden in het westen warden Canadese troepen, soldaten van de Belgische Brigade Piron en de Nederlandse Stoottroepers juichend als bevrijders ontvangen.Soldaten van de Belgische Brigade Piron werden als bevrijders onthaald en toegejuicht in Buren. The monument can be visited by following the signs ‘Monument Belge-britannique de SRA' walking up from either the hamlet of Maulusmühle (road from Clervaux to Binsfeld) or from the village of Boxhorn which takes about 30 minutes.

The remains of the destroyed aircraft remain at the site to this day.

Each grave has an individual marked number, this assists people in identifying graves when visiting.&nbsp;The cemetery has a central chapel with a combined altar for the Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish faiths, and stained glass windows with the patches of the US higher command units of both Army and Army Air Force.&nbsp;There are two panels with maps of the European Theatre of Operations of the Second World War, as well as the ‘Battle of the Ardennes’ and the ensuing Rhineland Campaign.&nbsp;The grave rows are accessible to people with reduced mobility and the visitor centre at the entrance provides information about the burials. The cemetery is open daily from 09:00 to 17:00, except for 25 December and 1 January.&nbsp;Every year, the American Embassy and the Luxembourg commemorative community organise an elaborate commemoration ceremony open to the public on the occasion of Memorial Day.

EUR was designed in the second half of the 1930s for an exposition to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the March on Rome and of fascist rule. Originally known as E42, its name was changed into EUR, an acronym for Rome Universal Exposition (Esposizione Universale di Roma). Due to the outbreak of the Second World War the exposition, which was due to begin in 1942, never took place and the original planning was never completed.The district is inspired by classic Roman city planning, with some elements of Italian rationalism. The planning includes a large road system and towering, massive and squared buildings, mostly made of marble and travertine to resemble temples and buildings of the Roman age. The symbolic building of this architecture model is the so-called Squared Colosseum, a nickname for the Palace of Italian Civilisation, inspired by metaphysical art.

The EUR district, southern of Rome, is one of the biggest examples of fascist urban planning and architecture in Italy. Mussolini planned to build a new Rome looking towards the future, and the EUR district represents the legacy of the fascist rationalist architecture.

EUR was designed in the second half of the 1930s for an exposition that had to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the March on Rome and of the fascist rule. Originally known as E42, its name was changed into EUR, acronym for Rome Universal Exposition (Esposizione Universale di Roma). Due to the outbreak of the Second World War, the exposition, that was to begin in 1942, never took place and the original planning was never completed.

The district is inspired by classic Roman city planning, with some elements of Italian rationalism. The planning includes a large road system and towering, massive and squared buildings, mostly made of marble and travertine to resemble temples and buildings of the Roman age. The symbolic building of this architecture model is the so-called Squared Colosseum, a nickname for the Palace of Italian Civilisation, inspired by metaphysical art.

Il complesso del quartiere EUR fu pianificato nella seconda metà degli anni Trenta, per un’esposizione che doveva celebrare i vent’anni dalla Marcia su Roma e dalla presa del potere da parte del fascismo. The Panther was transferred to the Seelig Barracks, but this made it more difficult for the population and for Polish veterans to see. The latter group felt hurt and started to lobby, successfully, the municipal administration. In 1952, the tank was returned to Wilhelmina Park, and now stands on the corner with Paul Windhausenweg. Thus, a unique (and now precious) piece of war history was preserved for posterity.

Der Plantagendirektor von Breda wollte den Panzer bereits 1946 versetzen, aber der Bürgermeister und die Ratsmitglieder waren damit noch nicht einverstanden. Dies änderte sich 1949 mit der Aufstellung des Polnischen Denkmals. Dieses wurde an der Stelle des Panzers aufgestellt, gegenüber der Hausnummer 44. Der Panther wurde in die Seelig-Kaserne verlegt, was es für die Bevölkerung und die polnischen Veteranen schwieriger machte, ihn zu sehen. De Directeur Beplantingen van Breda wilde de tank al in 1946&nbsp; verplaatsen, maar B&amp;W (Burgemeester en wethouders) gingen hier nog niet in mee. Dat veranderde in 1949 met de plaatsing van het Pools Monument. Dat kwam op de plek van de tank tegenover nummer 44. De Panther werd overgeplaatst naar de Seeligkazerne. Maar hierdoor wordt hij moeilijker zichtbaar voor de bevolking en Poolse veteranen. De laatste groep voelt zich gekwetst en ging met succes lobbyen bij het gemeentebestuur. In 1952 werd de tank teruggeplaatst naar het Wilhelminapark, nu op de hoek met de Paul Windhausenweg. Wśród innych pojazdów na poligonie czołgowym w pobliżu Meppen (Niemcy) znaleźli niemiecki czołg typu Panther, który według niektórych ekspertów był najlepszym czołgiem II wojny światowej. Czołg był starym modelem i nosił numer taktyczny 534, więc najprawdopodobniej w pewnym momencie walczył na froncie. Żeby było jasne: nigdy przeciwko Polakom i nigdy w Bredzie ani w jej okolicach!Podczas ceremonii w Bredzie czołg został przekazany burmistrzowi Van Slobbe przez dowódcę dywizji generała dywizji Klemensa Rudnickiego. Następnie odbyło się nabożeństwo i złożenie wieńców.Niestety dość szybko pojawiły się pierwsze problemy związane z czołgiem, który został nazwany „trudnym trofeum wojennym”. Dyrektor ds. plantacji w Bredzie chciał przenieść czołg już w 1946 r., ale rada miejska nie zgodziła się na to. Zmieniło się to w 1949 r. wraz z postawieniem Pomnika Polski. Pomnik stanął na miejscu czołgu, naprzeciwko numeru 44. Pantera została przeniesiona do Seelig Barracks, ale to utrudniło jej podziwianie przez zarówno przez ludność jak i polskich weteranów. Ci ostatni poczuli się pokrzywdzeni i zaczęli skutecznie lobbować w administracji miejskiej. W 1952 r. czołg powrócił do Parku Wilhelminy i obecnie stoi na rogu z Paul Windhausenweg. W ten sposób unikalny (i obecnie cenny) fragment historii wojennej został zachowany dla potomnych.

Strip foundations were used to reinforce the structure, which had a width of up to 13.45m.The construction of armoured obstacles was intended to reduce the danger of enemy tanks by requiring them to concentrate the attacks in certain places. Here, the hope was to intervene by a mobile defence of tank forces and anti-tank missiles.​As the Front continued to advance from the west in 1944, the Allies developed several methods to overcome the obstacles. Usually, infantry forces went ahead, formed a bridgehead, and then blew a gap in the obstacle so that their tanks could pass. From the German side, the Allies' movements were successfully controlled through the use of these obstacles, but they lacked forces of their own in the form of tanks and artillery pieces to counter the Allied advance.Today, the tank traps remain well preserved and are almost the only traces of the former fortification line. They document its course and are now protected monuments.

Ze strony niemieckiej ruchy aliantów były skutecznie kontrolowane dzięki wykorzystaniu tych przeszkód, ale brakowało im własnych sił w postaci czołgów i artylerii, które mogłyby przeciwdziałać natarciu aliantów.Dziś pułapki czołgowe są dobrze zachowane i stanowią niemal jedyne ślady dawnej linii fortyfikacyjnej. When in 1942 he was ordered to swear an oath to Hitler, he refused and was consequently sent to Dachau concentration camp of. He was liberated on 29 April 1945.When the Gauleiter declared compulsory military service in Luxembourg, Aloyse Kremer decided not to serve in the German Army and left Biwisch to join the Belgian Maquis (secret army). In the following months, he guided numerous Luxembourg deserters across the heavily guarded border. In July 1944 he was shot at by German police at Amberloup in Belgium. After surviving heavy interrogations at the Villa Pauly in Luxembourg, he was sent to the Reichskriegsgericht in Torgau. There he was sentenced to death and executed on 19 January 1945.During Aloyse’s time in prison in Luxembourg, his mother, Anne, and his sister, Lina, were arrested by the Gestapo. After interrogations they were both sent to Ravensbruck concentration camp, where Anna disappeared. Lina was then taken to Bergen-Belsen camp, where she was liberated by British troops. After a stay in Swedish hospitals, she was repatriated to Luxembourg.A monument honouring the Resistance activities of the Kremer family was inaugurated in 1985 in Biwisch.

Antonio Giuriolo, a literature graduate, anti-fascist and intellectual, came from Arzignano (VI) where he was active in the local Italian anti-fascist resistance movement Giustizia e Libertà and where he was among the organisers of the Veneto Resistance after 8 September 1943. Due to a wound in one hand, he was hospitalised under a false name at the Putti orthopaedic centre in Bologna, where other partisans were being cared for. There he was persuaded to reorganise the Matteotti Montagna brigade, which had been formed in the spring of 1944, but was without a commander at the time.&nbsp;He assumed leadership of the formation in July 1944; the operational area was the Upper Reno Valley, on the border between Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany. In cooperation with the Modena Armando Division, the brigade took part in the liberation of numerous Apennine towns in September-October 1944, including Porretta Terme. Later, it was rearmed and equipped by the Allies, taking over a large section of the front.&nbsp;On 12 December 1944, partisans captured a German post in Corona, a hamlet in the town of Lizzano in Belvedere west of Monte Belvedere, but were counter-attacked by Nazi troops. Antonio Giuriolo, called Toni, while covering his retreating men, was hit by a burst of machine-gun fire. Partisans Pietro Galiani and Nino Venturi also perished that day. The brigade continued its war operations until April 1945 and recorded 181 recognised partisans of whom 24 died and 19 were wounded.&nbsp;The monument, erected at the behest of the local ANPI section and the town of Porretta Terme, was inaugurated on 15 December 1946 to commemorate Giuriolo and the fallen partisans. Two dates are engraved on the stone: 19/07/1944, when Giuriolo took command of the brigade (according to some sources it was 10 or 16 July), and 12/12/1944, the day of his death. The ceremony was attended by Giuriolo's family members, civil and military authorities, and representatives of neighbourhood parties.

Antonio Giuriolo, laureato in lettere, antifascista e intellettuale, era originario di Arzignano (VI) dove fu attivo nei movimenti locali di Giustizia e Libertà e dove fu tra gli organizzatori della Resistenza veneta dopo l’8 settembre 1943. A causa di una ferita a una mano fu ricoverato sotto falso nome al centro ortopedico Putti di Bologna, in cui erano assistiti altri partigiani; là fu convinto a riorganizzare la brigata Matteotti Montagna costituita nella primavera 1944, ma in quel momento senza comandante. Assunse la guida della formazione nel luglio 1944; la zona operativa fu quella dell’Alta Valle del Reno, al confine fra Emilia-Romagna e Toscana. La brigata partecipò, in collaborazione con la Divisione Modena Armando, alla liberazione di numerosi paesi appenninici nel periodo settembre-ottobre 1944, fra cui quella di Porretta Terme. In seguito, fu riarmata ed equipaggiata dagli alleati, occupandosi di un ampio tratto del fronte. Il 12 dicembre 1944 i partigiani conquistarono una postazione tedesca a Corona, frazione del comune di Lizzano in Belvedere a ovest del Monte Belvedere, ma furono contrattaccati dalle truppe naziste. Antonio Giuriolo, detto Toni, mentre copriva i suoi uomini che si ritiravano, fu colpito da una raffica di colpi da mitragliatrice. Quel giorno perirono anche i partigiani Pietro Galiani e Nino Venturi. La brigata continuò le operazioni belliche fino all’aprile 1945 e registrò 181 partigiani riconosciuti di cui 24 morti e 19 feriti.Il monumento, eretto per volontà della sezione ANPI locale e del comune di Porretta Terme, è stato inaugurato il 15 dicembre 1946 per ricordare Giuriolo e i partigiani caduti. Sulla pietra sono incise due date: 19/07/1944, quando Giuriolo assunse il comando della brigata (secondo alcune fonti fu il 10 o il 16 luglio), e 12/12/1944, giorno della sua morte. Alla cerimonia parteciparono i familiari di Giuriolo, le autorità civili e militari, le rappresentanze dei partiti del circondario.
