Edwin Popken

Edwin Popken is a military historian focussing on World War II. For many years he has read military history, searched archives and visited battlefield sites. His passion for military history and battlefield guiding resulted in the founding of Battlefield Discovery - military history, research, lectures and guided tours.

Edwin’s interest in this war started at a young age, gradually expanding from reading books to searching archives and exploring the battlefields. He has a broad interest in World War II, but predominantly focuses on the 1944/1945 Rhineland operations such as Market Garden, Overloon, The Battle of the Bulge, Huertgenwald (Hurtgen Forest), Veritable/Blockbuster and Varsity/Plunder. He continuously updates his knowledge of historic events and the places where the fighting took place, and believes in the fusion of military history, local historical knowledge, historical topography and personal accounts to bring past events to live for his audience. He has a broad experience as a guide working with families of veterans, school classes, individuals and both small and large sized groups. As a guide Edwin strives to give a thorough and lively account of the battle, its broader context and how both soldiers and civilians experienced it, getting you as close to history as possible. But also to provide an battlefield experience to remember.

Edwin is a member of the The International Guild of Battlefield Guides, is pursuing a Master in Military History at the University of Birmingham (UK), and closely cooperates with several local war museums, in giving lectures and providing battlefield tours.
