On the 13th of October 1944, the area near this road junction is the scene of violent fighting. British soldiers are killed fighting German troops. A bombardment also takes place. A few days later, a 12-year old boy goes to look at the fallen.

On the 13th of October 1944, British soldiers of the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry Regiment walked into a German ambush near this intersection, still known as 'De Vijfsprong'. Three British soldiers were killed in the battle that ensued.

Shortly after, the RAF attempted to bomb the German troops, but also hit the farm ‘Ellenhoeve’. The farm was destroyed, but the Peeters family, who were hunkered in the shelter, were by a miracle unharmed.

A few days later, a 12-year-old boy from the neighbourhood, Neel Oonincx, was walking in the area and discovered the dead British soldiers.
