482. The Renesse Ten

December 1944. Schouwen-Duiveland has been largely inundated. A large part of the population, except from the Westhoek, has been taken away. When all men between 17-40 years will be sent to Germany, it is decided that the registers of Renesse and surrounding communities must disappear.

The occupier is furious. Ten people, to be known as The Ten from Renesse, are eeing to the liberated territory. They are arrested and sentenced to death by hanging. At th entrance of Slot Moermond, between two large trees, nine out of ten are hanged. The tenth prisoner, the seriously injured town clerk Lazonder, must watch. He dies the same night and is hung with the others. Following the hanging, he Germans force family and villagers to come and look. The bodies remain suspended for deterrence 48 hours.
