Het gedenkteken werd in 2005 ingewijd door president Jacques Chirac. De permanente tentoonstelling onderzoekt de geschiedenis van de Franse joden tijdens de Holocaust. Authentieke documenten, foto's, video- en audio-opnames worden getoond. Muzeum Pamięci Shoah w centrum Paryża znajduje się w dzielnicy Le Marais, zamieszkiwanej na początku II wojny światowej przez dużą populację żydowską. Muzeum Pamięci zostało otwarte przez prezydenta Jacques’a Chirac w 2005 roku. Stała wystawa poświęcona jest historii francuskich Żydów podczas Holokaustu. Znajdują się na niej autentyczne dokumenty, fotografie, materiały wideo oraz nagrania dźwiękowe. The Hollandsche Schouwburg is a Jewish monument in Amsterdam. Between 1893 and 1942 it functioned as a theatre. During the war it was used as a deportation centre from which Jews were transported to Camp Westerbork en Camp Vught. From there they were deported to camps in Germany. By initiative of the Joodsche Raad children were separated from their parents when arriving at the theatre. They were brought to the crèche opposite the street. From here they managed to let six hundred children escape. Stichting Hollandsche Schouwburg bought the premise in 1947 to prevent it from being used as a theatre again. In 1958, it was decided to arrange the building as a monument. The facade of the house was renovated while the backside was mostly demolished. The hall of the theatre was turned into a courtyard where a memorial place, designed by L. Waterman, was established. In the Hollandsche Schouwburg not only an exhibition dedicated to the Holocaust can be seen, but also changing expositions.

Vanuit daar werden ze dan weer gedeporteerd naar de kampen in Duitsland. Op initiatief van de Joodsche Raad werden kinderen bij aankomst in de schouwburg gescheiden van de ouders ondergebracht in een crèche aan de overkant van de straat. Vanuit deze crèche wist men zeshonderd kinderen te laten ontsnappen. Stichting Hollandsche Schouwburg kocht het pand in 1947 waardoor voorkomen werd dat het weer als theater gebruikt zou worden. In 1958 werd besloten om het gebouw als monument in te richten. De voorgevel van het huis werd gerestaureerd terwijl de achterzijde grotendeels werd afgebroken. Zo veranderde de schouwburgzaal in een binnenplaats waar een gedenkplaats werd opgericht, ontworpen door L. Waterman. It is surrounded by the debris from the engines, broken propellor blades and fuselage of the destroyed aircraft.&nbsp;Several explanation charts give details of the history of the unfortunate plane and its crew. The monument can be visited by following the signs ‘Monument Belge-britannique de SRA' walking up from either the hamlet of Maulusmühle (road from Clervaux to Binsfeld) or from the village of Boxhorn which takes about 30 minutes.

Het monument kan worden bezocht door de borden 'Monument Belge-britannique de SRA' te volgen en naar boven te lopen vanuit het gehucht Maulusmühle (weg van Clervaux naar Binsfeld) of vanuit het dorp Boxhorn, wat ongeveer 30 minuten duurt.

Unfortunately, fairly soon the first problems arose around the tank, which was called a 'difficult war trophy'. Breda's Director of Plantations wanted to move the tank as early as 1946, but the Mayor and Councillors did not go along with this yet. In 1949, with the placement of the Polish Monument, this changed. The monument was placed on the site of the tank, opposite number 44. The Panther was transferred to the Seelig Barracks, but this made it more difficult for the population and for Polish veterans to see. The latter group felt hurt and started to lobby, successfully, the municipal administration. In 1952, the tank was returned to Wilhelmina Park, and now stands on the corner with Paul Windhausenweg. Thus, a unique (and now precious) piece of war history was preserved for posterity.

Am Tag zuvor war ein großer Militär-Pritschenwagen mit einem deutschen Panther-Panzer angekommen. Dieser war der Stadt von den polnischen Befreiern geschenkt worden, als Dank für die freundschaftlichen Beziehungen zwischen den polnischen Soldaten und den Bewohnern der Stadt Breda.Zu diesem Zeitpunkt befand sich die 1. polnische Panzerdivision im Ems-Tal in Deutschland. Auf einem Panzerprüfgelände in der Nähe von Meppen (Deutschland) fanden sie unter anderen Fahrzeugen einen deutschen Panzer vom Typ Panther, der nach Ansicht einiger Experten der beste Panzer des Zweiten Weltkriegs war. Der Panzer war ein altes Modell und trug die taktische Nummer 534, so dass er höchstwahrscheinlich irgendwann einmal an der Front eingesetzt worden war. Um es klar zu sagen: nie gegen die Polen und nie in oder um Breda!Bei der Zeremonie in Breda wurde der Panzer vom polnischen Divisionskommandanten Generalmajor Klemens Rudnicki an Bürgermeister Bartholomeus van Slobbe übergeben. Es folgten ein Gottesdienst und eine Kranzniederlegung. Leider traten schon bald die ersten Probleme mit dem Panzer auf, der als 'schwierige Kriegstrophäe' bezeichnet wurde. Der Plantagendirektor von Breda wollte den Panzer bereits 1946 versetzen, aber der Bürgermeister und die Ratsmitglieder waren damit noch nicht einverstanden. Dies änderte sich 1949 mit der Aufstellung des Polnischen Denkmals. Dieses wurde an der Stelle des Panzers aufgestellt, gegenüber der Hausnummer 44. Der Panther wurde in die Seelig-Kaserne verlegt, was es für die Bevölkerung und die polnischen Veteranen schwieriger machte, ihn zu sehen. Letztere fühlten sich verletzt und begannen mit Erfolg, bei der Stadtverwaltung Lobbyarbeit zu betreiben. 1952 wurde der Panzer in den Wilhelmina-Park zurückgebracht und steht nun an der Ecke zum Paul-Windhausen-Weg. Auf diese Weise wurde ein einzigartiges (und heute wertvolles) Stück Kriegsgeschichte für die Nachwelt erhalten. Op maandag 30 oktober 1945 vond er in het Wilhelminapark een feestelijke plechtigheid plaats. Een dag daarvoor was een grote militaire dieplader gearriveerd met een Duitse Panther tank. Deze werd door de Poolse bevrijders geschonken aan de stad als dank voor de warme band tussen de Poolse militairen en Breda.&nbsp;&nbsp;De 1e Poolse Pantserdivisie bevond zich op dat moment in de Eemsvallei. Op een testterrein voor tanks bij Meppen vonden de Polen te midden van andere voertuigen een Duitse tank van het type Panther, volgens sommige kenners de beste tank van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Het is een&nbsp;ouder model en draagt het tactische nummer 534. De tank heeft hoogst waarschijnlijk dus ooit ergens aan het front gevochten. Voor de duidelijkheid: nooit tegen de Polen en nooit in of rond Breda!&nbsp;Bij de plechtigheid in Breda werd de tank door de divisiecommandant generaal-majoor Klemens Rudnicki overhandigd aan burgemeester Van Slobbe. Hierna volgden een kerkdienst en kransleggingen.&nbsp;&nbsp;Jammer genoeg ontstonden al vrij snel de eerste problemen rond de tank, die een ‘moeilijke oorlogstrophee’ werd genoemd. De Directeur Beplantingen van Breda wilde de tank al in 1946&nbsp; verplaatsen, maar B&amp;W (Burgemeester en wethouders) gingen hier nog niet in mee. Dat veranderde in 1949 met de plaatsing van het Pools Monument. Dat kwam op de plek van de tank tegenover nummer 44. De Panther werd overgeplaatst naar de Seeligkazerne. Maar hierdoor wordt hij moeilijker zichtbaar voor de bevolking en Poolse veteranen. De laatste groep voelt zich gekwetst en ging met succes lobbyen bij het gemeentebestuur. In 1952 werd de tank teruggeplaatst naar het Wilhelminapark, nu op de hoek met de Paul Windhausenweg. Zo is een uniek (en inmiddels kostbaar) stukje oorlogsgeschiedenis bewaard gebleven voor het nageslacht.&nbsp; W poniedziałek 30 października 1945 r. w Wilhelmina Park odbyła się uroczysta ceremonia. Dzień wcześniej przyjechała duża wojskowa ciężarówka z platformą na której znajdował się niemiecki czołg Panther. Został on podarowany miastu przez polskich wyzwolicieli w podziękowaniu za przyjazne relacje między polskimi żołnierzami a Bredą.W tym czasie 1 Polska Dywizja Pancerna znajdowała się w dolinie rzeki Ems (Niemcy). Wśród innych pojazdów na poligonie czołgowym w pobliżu Meppen (Niemcy) znaleźli niemiecki czołg typu Panther, który według niektórych ekspertów był najlepszym czołgiem II wojny światowej. Czołg był starym modelem i nosił numer taktyczny 534, więc najprawdopodobniej w pewnym momencie walczył na froncie. Żeby było jasne: nigdy przeciwko Polakom i nigdy w Bredzie ani w jej okolicach!Podczas ceremonii w Bredzie czołg został przekazany burmistrzowi Van Slobbe przez dowódcę dywizji generała dywizji Klemensa Rudnickiego. Następnie odbyło się nabożeństwo i złożenie wieńców.Niestety dość szybko pojawiły się pierwsze problemy związane z czołgiem, który został nazwany „trudnym trofeum wojennym”. Dyrektor ds. plantacji w Bredzie chciał przenieść czołg już w 1946 r., ale rada miejska nie zgodziła się na to. Zmieniło się to w 1949 r. wraz z postawieniem Pomnika Polski. Pomnik stanął na miejscu czołgu, naprzeciwko numeru 44. Pantera została przeniesiona do Seelig Barracks, ale to utrudniło jej podziwianie przez zarówno przez ludność jak i polskich weteranów. Ci ostatni poczuli się pokrzywdzeni i zaczęli skutecznie lobbować w administracji miejskiej. W 1952 r. czołg powrócił do Parku Wilhelminy i obecnie stoi na rogu z Paul Windhausenweg. W ten sposób unikalny (i obecnie cenny) fragment historii wojennej został zachowany dla potomnych.

Antonio Giuriolo, a literature graduate, anti-fascist and intellectual, came from Arzignano (VI) where he was active in the local Italian anti-fascist resistance movement Giustizia e Libertà and where he was among the organisers of the Veneto Resistance after 8 September 1943. Due to a wound in one hand, he was hospitalised under a false name at the Putti orthopaedic centre in Bologna, where other partisans were being cared for. There he was persuaded to reorganise the Matteotti Montagna brigade, which had been formed in the spring of 1944, but was without a commander at the time.&nbsp;He assumed leadership of the formation in July 1944; the operational area was the Upper Reno Valley, on the border between Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany. In cooperation with the Modena Armando Division, the brigade took part in the liberation of numerous Apennine towns in September-October 1944, including Porretta Terme. Later, it was rearmed and equipped by the Allies, taking over a large section of the front.&nbsp;On 12 December 1944, partisans captured a German post in Corona, a hamlet in the town of Lizzano in Belvedere west of Monte Belvedere, but were counter-attacked by Nazi troops. Antonio Giuriolo, called Toni, while covering his retreating men, was hit by a burst of machine-gun fire. Partisans Pietro Galiani and Nino Venturi also perished that day. The brigade continued its war operations until April 1945 and recorded 181 recognised partisans of whom 24 died and 19 were wounded.&nbsp;The monument, erected at the behest of the local ANPI section and the town of Porretta Terme, was inaugurated on 15 December 1946 to commemorate Giuriolo and the fallen partisans. Two dates are engraved on the stone: 19/07/1944, when Giuriolo took command of the brigade (according to some sources it was 10 or 16 July), and 12/12/1944, the day of his death. The ceremony was attended by Giuriolo's family members, civil and military authorities, and representatives of neighbourhood parties.

Antonio Giuriolo, laureato in lettere, antifascista e intellettuale, era originario di Arzignano (VI) dove fu attivo nei movimenti locali di Giustizia e Libertà e dove fu tra gli organizzatori della Resistenza veneta dopo l’8 settembre 1943. A causa di una ferita a una mano fu ricoverato sotto falso nome al centro ortopedico Putti di Bologna, in cui erano assistiti altri partigiani; là fu convinto a riorganizzare la brigata Matteotti Montagna costituita nella primavera 1944, ma in quel momento senza comandante. Assunse la guida della formazione nel luglio 1944; la zona operativa fu quella dell’Alta Valle del Reno, al confine fra Emilia-Romagna e Toscana. La brigata partecipò, in collaborazione con la Divisione Modena Armando, alla liberazione di numerosi paesi appenninici nel periodo settembre-ottobre 1944, fra cui quella di Porretta Terme. In seguito, fu riarmata ed equipaggiata dagli alleati, occupandosi di un ampio tratto del fronte. Il 12 dicembre 1944 i partigiani conquistarono una postazione tedesca a Corona, frazione del comune di Lizzano in Belvedere a ovest del Monte Belvedere, ma furono contrattaccati dalle truppe naziste. Antonio Giuriolo, detto Toni, mentre copriva i suoi uomini che si ritiravano, fu colpito da una raffica di colpi da mitragliatrice. Quel giorno perirono anche i partigiani Pietro Galiani e Nino Venturi. La brigata continuò le operazioni belliche fino all’aprile 1945 e registrò 181 partigiani riconosciuti di cui 24 morti e 19 feriti.Il monumento, eretto per volontà della sezione ANPI locale e del comune di Porretta Terme, è stato inaugurato il 15 dicembre 1946 per ricordare Giuriolo e i partigiani caduti. Sulla pietra sono incise due date: 19/07/1944, quando Giuriolo assunse il comando della brigata (secondo alcune fonti fu il 10 o il 16 luglio), e 12/12/1944, giorno della sua morte. Alla cerimonia parteciparono i familiari di Giuriolo, le autorità civili e militari, le rappresentanze dei partiti del circondario.

The chapel houses the Black Madonna - a small sculpture of Virgin Mary with Jesus made of clay by one of the prisoners at Remagen. Research proved that the figure was made by the renowned sculptor Adolf Wamper, who had been called up in March 1945, just a month before his capture.

Budowę Kaplicy, ulokowanej na miejscu tymczasowego obozu jenieckiego Remagen, ukończono w roku 1987. Upamiętnia ona los tysięcy niemieckich jeńców wojennych cierpiących tu niewolę oraz setek, którzy zmarli w wyniku chorób i braku schronienia. W kaplicy znajduje się nieduża figurka Czarnej Madonny – Matki Bożej z Dzieciagkiem – wykonanej z gliny przez jednego z jeńców. Badania wykazały, że jej autorem był sławny rzeźbiarz Adolf Wamper, powołany do Wehrmachtu w marcu 1945 r., zaledwie miesiąc nim znalazł się w niewoli. Située sur le site de l'enclos temporaire pour prisonniers de guerre à Remagen, la Chapelle de la Paix a été inaugurée en 1987 pour commémorer le sort de milliers de prisonniers allemands qui y ont souffert et de centaines d'autres qui sont morts de froid ou de maladie. La chapelle abrite la Vierge Noire - une petite sculpture de la Vierge Marie avec Jésus, réalisée en argile par l'un des prisonniers de l’enclos de Remagen. A boulder on Stationsweg marks the spot where the Grüne Polizei shot dead two resistance fighters. A bronze plaque lists their names: Jan ten Cate and Carel Frederik Kwant. Both were from Meppel and were imprisoned in the Noorder Sanatorium a little way away. J. van der Velde saw it all happen on that day on 3 August 1943. Their bodies remained lying there all day. Intended as a deterrent.&nbsp;Their deaths were the provisional end of a series of events, which began on 31 July with the liquidation of NSB member Willem Reilingh. Two gunshots fired by resistance fighters ended his operations along the Esweg between Midlaren and Zuidlaren. It was feared that Reilingh would pass on information about the resistance. It was a dangerous course of action as reprisals were bound to follow. It was therefore a decision fraught with mixed feelings, but it had to be done.&nbsp;&nbsp;Seven Zuidlaarders were arrested when the liquidation became known. They would certainly have been sentenced to death by the Polizeistandgericht in Assen if the perpetrators had not been caught. But thanks in part to Ms Reilingh, the seven were freed.&nbsp;Jan ten Cate and Carel Frederik Kwant, two Meppel resistance fighters, were shot in retaliation at the spot where the memorial stone now stands.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;As a key witness, Van der Velde had to give evidence at the Main Tribunal in Groningen five years after the war. One of the two accused officers from the Grüne Polizei was handed an 18-year sentence as a result. The second suspect could not be found.&nbsp;The two boulders that Van der Velde had initially placed on the spot in honour of the two killed resistance fighters were moved one day by the municipality due to works. Van der Velde was not impressed by that and he stated: "Soon no one will know the meaning of these boulders." Van der Velde found a willing ear in the form of Mr A. Snippe, chairman of the CDA parliamentary group on the municipal council. A new boulder was put in place in the original spot. A bronze plaque serves as a tribute to those who perished in Meppel, but also to keep alive the memory of the horrors of war.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Ze zouden zeker door het Polizeistandgericht in Assen ter dood veroordeeld zijn als de daders niet waren opgepakt. Mede dankzij mevrouw Reilingh werden de zeven in vrijheid gesteld.&nbsp;Wel zijn de twee Meppeler verzetsstrijders Jan ten Cate en Carel Frederik Kwant als represaille doodgeschoten op de plek waar nu de herdenkingssteen ligt.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Als hoofdgetuige moest Van der Velde vijf jaar na de oorlog een verklaring afleggen bij het hoofdtribunaal te Groningen. Eén van de twee verdachte officieren van de Grüne Polizei kreeg daardoor een straf van 18 jaar. De tweede verdachte is niet meer achterhaald.&nbsp;De twee stenen die Van der Velde aanvankelijk had gelegd op de plek waar de twee verzetsstrijders vermoord waren werden op een dag vanwege werkzaamheden door de gemeente verplaatst. Van der Velde vond dat maar niks en klom in de pen: “Straks weet niemand meer wat de betekenis is van deze stenen”. Via de heer A. Snippe, fractievoorzitter van het CDA in de gemeenteraad vond Van der Velde een gewillig oor. Er kwam een nieuwe steen terug op de oorspronkelijke plek. Met een bronzen plaatje als eerbetoon aan de omgekomen Meppelers, maar ook om de herinnering levend te houden aan de gruwelen van een oorlog.&nbsp;

At the crack of dawn on 12 August, a truck with 40 German soldiers escorted by an armoured car burst into the town, firing at everyone in sight.&nbsp;​The German soldiers entered the houses shouting, brutally kicking people out and beating them with their rifles. One woman was thrown off the balcony and left on the pavement with fractured legs. They then took more than 200 people hostage (including children and elderly), locked them up in a dead-end alley in Via R. Margherita, and then dragged them forcefully to the locality of Cannizzu, herding them into a sheepfold.&nbsp;​​Negotiations began for their release, mediated by don Giosuè Russo, don Salvatore Savoca, and sister Anna Amelia Casini. The delegation immediately obtained the release of the Mayor Ignazio Travagliante, the doctor, and the pharmacist. On the morning of 14 August, all hostages were released, with an order to evacuate the town. In the meantime, the German forces raided animals, means of transport and basic necessities, and burned the houses. A total of 16 people, aged between 17 and 82, were killed, and twenty were seriously wounded. British troops arrived two days later.&nbsp;​On 14 October 1943, the 'Corriere di Sicilia' gave the first news of the massacre. On 1 June 1946, a plaque was placed on the wall of the Town Hall.&nbsp;​In 1963, writer Leonardo Sciascia wrote about the massacre, and in 2002, Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi awarded the municipality a bronze medal. Between 2012 and 2013, research by Angelo Manita and Rosario Mangiameli made it possible to reconstruct the facts.​&nbsp;

In the meantime, the German forces raided animals, means of transport and basic necessities, and burned the houses. A total of 16 people, aged between 17 and 82, were killed, and twenty were seriously wounded. It stands on Rabbijn Maarsenplein. This square, named after one of the victims, was until 1943 the heart of The Hague's Jewish quarter. The monument shows a door ajar, with two bronze suitcases next to it symbolising the deportation. On the door is an image of the Star of David with four despairing people. There are six seats opposite, a resting point for those who wish to pause for contemplation. The number is a reference to the six million murdered Jews. There is a symbol on either side of each seat, representing the 12 tribes of Israel. This is to remind us that everyone, regardless of their background or position, was eventually pulled into the Nazi killing machine. The Jewish Children's Monument is here too, on the site of the playground of the former Jewish primary school on Bezemstraat. It comprises six staircases or ladders, which also resemble stacks of chairs. Chairs no longer used because the Jewish children are no longer here. The idea behind the design is that you use the stairs or ladder of chairs to climb up to heaven, where the Jewish children are. The chairs bear the names of 400 children who died. The Children's Monument is surrounded by a metal ring with the following text in Dutch and Hebrew: “Gone is the Jewish quarter. Gone are the children. Deported and murdered in World War II. Because they were Jewish. Around 1700 Jewish children from The Hague never returned. Many of them used to play here. Went to school here. Let us not forget and ensure nothing like this ever happens again.”

Het Joods Monument is ter nagedachtenis aan de Joodse Haagenaars die tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog zijn gedeporteerd en vermoord. Het monument is gebouwd op het Rabbijn Maarsenplein. Het plein, vernoemd naar een van de slachtoffers, was tot 1943 het hart van de Haagse Jodenbuurt was. Het monument toont een deur op een kier, met daarnaast twee bronzen koffers, die symbool staan voor de deportatie. Op de deur een davidster met vier wanhopige mensen. Er tegenover zes zitplaatsen, als rustpunt voor wie wil nadenken. Het aantal verwijst naar de zes miljoen vermoorde Joden. Op elke zitplaats is aan beide kanten het symbool van één van de twaalf stammen van Israël aangebracht. Dit symboliseert dat allen, ongeacht afkomst of positie, uiteindelijk de moordmachine van de nazi’s werden binnengetrokken. Ook staat hier het Joods Kindermonument, op de speelplaats van de voormalige Joodse lagere school aan de Bezemstraat. Het monument heeft de vorm van zes trappen of ladders, die ook op opgestapelde stoelen lijken. Stoelen die niet meer worden gebruikt, omdat de Joodse kinderen er niet meer zijn. Het idee van het ontwerp is dat je via de stoelentrap of -ladder omhoog klimt richting de hemel, waar de Joodse kinderen nu zijn. Op de stoelen staan de namen van 400 omgekomen kinderen. Rondom het Kindermonument is een metalen ring met een tekst in het Nederlands en Hebreeuws : ‘Verdwenen is de Joodse buurt. Verdwenen zijn de kinderen. Weggevoerd en vermoord in de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Omdat ze Joods waren. Ongeveer 1700 Haags-Joodse kinderen keerden niet meer terug. Velen van hen speelden hier. Gingen hier naar school. Laten we ze niet vergeten en zorgen dat zoiets nooit meer gebeurt’.

Some 1,000 young men left Luxembourg and found refuge in France and Belgium, joining there the local resistance movements (maquis).Some 2,500 went into hiding in Luxembourg either in private homes or in hiding places outside villages and towns. This was a risky decision as their families were forcefully resettled in Silesia, their assets in Luxembourg being confiscated, and the &nbsp;‘deserter’ &nbsp;himself was to be court martialled and condemned to death.For security reasons many young people had to often change their hiding places. One of these hiding places was the former mine ‘Hondsbësch’ where 122 young men went underground from February to August 1944. It was the largest group that went into hiding in one place creating enormous problems concerning activities, health, provision of food, discipline, installation of electricity and lighting.As the Gestapo did their &nbsp;utmost to find these ‘deserters’, strict measures to avoid being discovered had to be imposed. A resistance fighter was designated to keep an eye on the behavior of the inmates.A large network outside of the mine provided food, doctors volunteered to look after ill young men, forced to stay in the damp and dark underground during the day. They were permitted to go &nbsp;out for a short period &nbsp;at night only. When suddenly the Germans asked to obtain &nbsp;a map of old mines, the hiding places seemed unsafe and were &nbsp;evacuated several weeks before liberation of Luxembourg 10 September 1944.The ‘Hondsbësch’ mine was declared a national monument in 1991.

Toen de Duitsers plotseling vroegen om een kaart van oude mijnen, bleken de schuilplaatsen onveilig en werden ze enkele weken voor de bevrijding van Luxemburg op 10 september 1944 geëvacueerd.De mijn 'Hondsbësch' werd in 1991 uitgeroepen tot nationaal monument.

​​On 31 October 1942, 618 men, women and children from Jersey arrived at Schloss Wurzach - an early 18th century castle in the southern German state of Baden-Württemberg - where they would remain until June 1945. These British-born Islanders were deported in direct response to the internment of German agents and citizens working in Iran by Britain. Hitler was outraged by this act and ordered the German Foreign Ministry to consider reprisals.​Following their enforced three-year stay in Wurzach, many internees swore they would never return to Germany. However, just a few years later, the first former internees once again returned to their place of captivity in order to renew the personal contacts and friendships forged during those years.​​In 1970, the first large group of ex-internees returned to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Liberation of the Channel Islands. Over the years the visits continued, personal friendships endured and regular student exchanges took place, laying the foundation for the symbolic twinning of St Helier and Bad Wurzach in 2002.​In 2005, to mark the 60th anniversary of the Liberation, the pavement outside the Town Hall was fitted with an inscribed stone carrying the words of former internee Michael Ginns. They read:​‘Forgiveness leads to understanding. Understanding leads to friendship. Friendship leads to reconciliation. Reconciliation leads to peace, both in our hearts and in the world.’​

On the wall of the Town Hall reception is a framed certificate that was signed in 2002 to formalise the twinning.​

Operation Market Garden came to a halt in the Betuwe in late September 1944. The front stiffened along the river Linge, and sudden shell and sniper fire made the lives of the soldiers difficult. Autumn rains also caused flooding, meaning that the foxholes flooded. From early December, things got even worse when German troops blew up the Rijndijk near Elden. Much of the Betuwe flooded and he No Man's Land became a 'No Man's Water'.Meanwhile, friend and foe alike had evacuated the citizenry en masse. No matter where the exodus took the residents, everyone felt displaced. It was not until early April 1945 that the war ended in the Over-Betuwe and the Allies then captured the still occupied part of the region.'The Wing' is a symbol that refers to all these acts of war and is a metaphor for those who are not yet free from war. Breaking free, mentally, from the violence of war is a long process: unprocessed pain and misery are a handicap which stops one being fully capable.The quest for redemption from war pain applies to both mthe ilitary and civilians, and understanding and attention can have a healing effect. For that reason, this memorial is also an ode to those who stay in our midst as war refugees and to veterans, who have been on a peace mission.Forget death and you have no life. Forget the war and you have no peace.

The monument represents a 7 meter tall steel wing sticking out of the ploughed earth at an angle. It serves as a metaphor for the people that still have not been ´liberated´ from the war.

Operation Market Garden came to a halt in the Betuwe at the end of September 1944. The front stabilised along the river Linge. Shelling took place back and forth while patrols and man to man fighting were common activities. During this period the evacuation of the civilian population took place. The German forces blew up a dike at Elden flooding the country. No man´s land turned into No man´s water. It took until April 1945 before the war came to an end for the Overbetuwe. After endless evacuations the civilians returned to their destroyed and plundered houses. Many places were still unsafe due to the presence of explosives but the process of rebuilding could start.

The mental consequences of a war are hard to shake off. The pain and suffering sustained by those who witnessed the events can be a true handicap. The monument serves to remind us of the suffering people have endured even after the war came to and end. It also serves as a monument for war refugees and veterans that took part in peace missions around the world.

On 18 September 1948, the Polish monument 'The Dying Pole' was unveiled on the Zeestraat in Axel. This in the presence of Colonel Zdzislaw Szydlowski and about 30 Polish soldiers. The statue was made by Cephas Stauthamer, East Zeeland Fleming by birth, commissioned by the municipality of Axel. It depicts a person's solidified moment of death. The plaque on the plinth reads: 'To Poland's sons who fought to the death on this ground for our freedom'.The left hand, on the heart region, indicates the gravity of the personal sacrifice and the outstretched right hand, as it were, offers the sacrifice made. The bronze monument came about after a fundraising campaign among the people of Axel and is a tribute to the Polish soldiers and the fallen liberators. Every year on 4 May, Axel's annual commemoration of the dead takes place at the statue.

Pomnik z brązu powstał w wyniku zbiórki pieniędzy wśród mieszkańców Axel i jest hołdem dla polskich żołnierzy i poległych wyzwolicieli. Co roku 4 maja w Axel odbywają się pod pomnikiem uroczystości upamiętniające poległych.

“It was an enormous relief”, recalls Bob Le Sueur, “there was a feeling quite suddenly of freedom. We no longer had to worry about whether or not anyone knew that we were hearing the BBC on one of our secret little radios. We no longer had to watch carefully what one said, even to a close friend in case that person might be too talkative and gossipy. We could begin living all over again. We no longer had in front of us huge swastika flags flying outside our public buildings.”Marking the significance of these events required a poignant and powerful memorial sculpture. Unveiled by the Prince of Wales on the 50th anniversary of the Liberation, Monument to Freedom, otherwise known as the Liberation Sculpture, is the design of sculptor Philip Jackson FRSS. It depicts joyous Islanders waving a Union Flag at the moment of the Liberation of Jersey, after five long years of German Occupation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dévoilé par le prince de Galles à l'occasion du 50e anniversaire de la libération, le Monument à la liberté, également connu sous le nom de Sculpture de la libération, est l'œuvre du sculpteur Philip Jackson FRSS. Elle représente des insulaires joyeux agitant un drapeau de l'Union au moment de la libération de Jersey, après cinq longues années d'occupation allemande . As a tribute to the liberators of Axel, the monument to Colonel Zdzislaw Szydlowski stands on the square that also bears his name.The artwork consists of three bronze plaques in a white column. Kolonel Szydlowski was de bevelhebber van de Poolse eenheden die in september 1944 Axel &nbsp;bevrijdden. In 1946 werd hij hiervoor benoemd tot ereburger van Axel. Als eerbetoon aan de bevrijders van Axel staat het monument voor Kolonel Zdzislaw Szydlowski aan het plein dat ook zijn naam draagt.Het kunstwerk bestaat uit drie bronzen platen in een witte zuil. Het oorspronkelijke monument was een gemetselde bank met plaquettes en werd in 1959 onthuld door generaal Maczek van de Eerste Poolse Pantserdivisie. Later zijn de platen uitgevoerd in brons.Na de herinrichting van het plein in 2016 zijn de bronzen platen herplaatst in het nieuwe monument. Kort daarna werden acht informatieborden geplaatst rondom het plein en in het Szydlowskipark bij de voormalige katholieke begraafplaats. De borden van de 'Bevrijdingsroute’ geven uitleg over de vier dagen strijd tijdens de bevrijding van Axel in 1944.&nbsp;&nbsp; Pułkownik Szydłowski był dowódcą polskich oddziałów, które wyzwoliły Axel we wrześniu 1944 roku. W 1946 r. został za to honorowym obywatelem Axel. Znaki "Szlaku Wyzwolenia" (Bevrijdingsroute) opowiadają o czterech dniach walki podczas wyzwalania Axel w 1944 roku.

The Airborne Monument on Ginkel Heath in Ede is a concrete pillar with a copper eagle at the top with its wings spread as if in full flight. The plinth is shaped like a crystal with the pillar emerging out of it like a prism. There are three copper symbols on the pillar. The first is a winged parachute wearing a crown. The second, is the emblem of the Kings Own Scottish Borderers and the third, an image of a purple Pegasus (the mythological winged horse). At the foot of the pillar, there is a plaque made of natural stone and ten metres away, there is a large boulder with an inscription on it. The memorial is 3m high, 30cm wide and 30cm deep.

Airborne Monument Ede

 Das "Airborne-Denkmal" auf der Ginkelse Heide in Ede besteht aus einer Gedenksäule aus Beton, gekrönt von einem kupfernen Adler mit gespreizten Flügeln. Der Sockel hat die Form eines Kristalls, aus dem das Denkmal sich wie ein Prisma erhebt. Auf der Säule sind drei Kupferembleme angebracht. Auf dem ersten Emblem ist ein geflügelter und gekrönter Fallschirm abgebildet, auf dem zweiten das Wappen der King's Own Scottish Borderers und auf dem dritten Emblem die Abbildung eines Pegasus (dem geflügelten Pferd aus der griechischen Mythologie). Am Fuß des Denkmals befindet sich eine Tafel aus Naturstein. Im Abstand von 10 Metern liegt ein Findling mit einer Inschrift. Das Denkmal ist 3 Meter hoch, 30 Zentimeter breit und 30 Zentimeter tief.

The Westerplatte Depot lacked appropriate living quarters for its garrison until the so-called new barracks were constructed in 1934–1935. The three-level building (with a cellar, a high ground floor and a first floor) housed offices, dormitories, an armoury, a gun repair shop, ammunition and storage rooms and other facilities. Its equipment was very modern for its time, with central heating, spacious bathrooms, a sick room and a radio station. The building was designed in such a way that the ceilings of the two upper floors would absorb the energy of bombs and shells hitting its roof, protecting the crew hidden in the cellar shelter. This system passed the test with flying colours, as the bombs dropped from airplanes did not damage the cellar. A machine-gun room was located in the barracks. Some of its windows were modified for the installation of machine guns. A small machine-gun room with an embrasure survives in the south-west corner of the building. The south wing of the new barracks housed a sick room and a medicine store. German machine-gun fire from the New Port destroyed its whole equipment in the first minutes of the attack. Today, the condition of the building is also the result of post-war devastation, which included indoor detonations of unexploded shells and bombs. The northern wing of the barracks was finally demolished in the 1960s to make room for a promenade leading to the mound of the monument to the Defenders of Westerplatte.

Les tirs de mitrailleuses allemands en provenance du nouveau port détruisirent l'intégralité de l'équipement dans les premières minutes de l'attaque. L'état actuel du complexe est dû aux ravages d'après-guerre, et notamment aux détonations intérieures d'obus et de bombes non explosés. L'aile nord des casernes fut finalement détruite dans les années 1960 afin de créer une promenade qui mène sur le tumulus du monument dédié aux défenseurs de Westerplatte. System ten w pełni zdał egzamin, ponieważ bomby zrzucane z samolotów nie uszkodziły sutereny. W koszarach mieściła się też kabina bojowa. Niektóre z jej okien zmodyfikowano dla zainstalowania w nich karabinów maszynowych. Mniejsze pomieszczenie bojowe ze strzelnicą przetrwało w południowo-zachodnim narożniku budynku. Południowe skrzydło nowych koszar mieściło lazaret i skład leków. Ogień z niemieckich karabinów maszynowych z Nowego Portu zniszczył całe to wyposażenie w pierwszych minutach ataku. Dzisiejszy stan budynku jest też skutkiem dewastacji powojennej. Wewnątrz dokonywano między innymi detonacji niewybuchów. Północne skrzydło koszar zostało ostatecznie wyburzone w latach 1960-tych, żeby stworzyć promenadę wiodącą do pomnika ku czci Obrońców Westerplatte. Die während des Angriffs abgeworfenen Fliegerbomben führten tatsächlich zu keiner Beschädigung der Kellerräume. Die Konstruktion des Gebäudes hatte den Praxistest bestanden. In einem Teil der Kaserne gab es einen Maschinengewehrraum. Einige Fenster wurden für den Aufbau von Maschinengewehren umgestaltet. Eine ehemalige Maschinengewehrstellung mit Schießscharte ist noch in der Südwestecke des Gebäudes zu besichtigen. Der Südflügel der neuen Kaserne beherbergte ein Krankenzimmer und ein Medikamentenlager. Seine gesamte Einrichtung wurde in den ersten Minuten des Angriffs durch deutsches Maschinengewehrfeuer vom neuen Hafen aus vollständig zerstört. Der heutige Zustand des Gebäudes ist auch ein Ergebnis seines Verfalls in der Nachkriegszeit, denn im Gebäude explodierten später immer wieder Blindgänger. Der Nordflügel der Kaserne wurde in den 1960er Jahren vollständig abgetragen, um Platz für den breiten, zum Hügel mit dem Denkmal für die Verteidiger der Westerplatte führenden Weg zu schaffen. That summer also 23.600 Jewish prisoners from Auschwitz – mostly women from Hungary – and 10.000 Jews from the Kovno (Kaunas) ghetto arrived in Stutthof. Even larger deportations started in August 1944 from camps and ghettos in the Baltic states, especially Riga, Vilnius and Kaunas. To compare some figures: In June 1944, only 3% of the 37.600 prisoners were Jewish. At the end of that year, nearly 50.000 Jews were deported to Stutthof, 98% of them women, making them the biggest prisoners’ group of the camp... Stutthof became overcrowded. The living conditions deteriorated quickly. Jews were separated and isolated from the other prisoners. They lived in primitive conditions in overcrowded barracks, lacking even primitive sanitary facilities. Food rations were absurdly small. A gas chamber was installed for killing groups of 25 to 30 Jews at a time. By January 1945, some 9.400 Jews were already killed. But the last months were the most horrible. After the first death march in January, about 7.000 Jewish women were left in behind in Stutthof. Only 1500 of them survived the war, partially as a result of new death marches.

The evacuation of Jews

Le camp de Stutthof devint alors surpeuplé et les conditions de vie se détériorèrent rapidement. Les Juifs furent séparés et isolés des autres prisonniers. Ils vécurent dans des conditions primitives, dans des baraquements surpeuplés et en l'absence d'équipements sanitaires de base. Les rations de nourriture étaient quant à elles ridiculement petites. Une chambre à gaz fut installée, permettant de tuer des groupes de 25 à 30 Juifs à la fois. En janvier 1945, près de 9 400 Juifs avaient ainsi été tués. Toutefois, les derniers mois furent les plus terribles. Après la première marche de la mort, en janvier, environ 7 000 femmes juives furent laissées au camp de Stutthof. Seules 1 500 d'entre elles survécurent à la guerre, en raison notamment des marches de la mort qui suivirent. Kiedy w czerwcu 1944 r. Tego samego lata do Stutthofu wywieziono też 23.600 więźniów żydowskich z Auschwitz – głównie kobiet z Węgier – oraz 10.000 Żydów z getta w Kownie. Jeszcze większe transporty uruchomiono w sierpniu 1944 r. z obozów i gett w państwach bałtyckich, szczególnie z Rygi, Wilna i Kowna. Oto kilka orientacyjnych liczb: w czerwcu 1944 r. zaledwie 3% z 37.600 więźniów obozu było narodowości żydowskiej. Pod koniec tego roku do Stutthofu przywieziono niemal 50.000 Żydów, z czego 98% stanowiły kobiety. W ten sposób Żydzi stali się największą grupą więźniów obozu. Stutthof przepełnił się. Warunki bytowe szybko się pogarszały. Żydów oddzielono i odizolowano od pozostałych więźniów. Żyli w prymitywnych warunkach, w zatłoczonych barakach pozbawionych nawet prymitywnych urządzeń sanitarnych. Racje żywnościowe były absurdalnie małe. Zainstalowano komorę gazową, mieszczącą 25 do 30 osób na raz. Do stycznia 1945 r. wymordowano już około 9.400 Żydów. Najstraszniejsze były jednak ostatnie miesiące. Po pierwszym marszu śmierci w styczniu, w Stutthofie pozostało około 7.000 kobiet żydowskich. Wojnę przetrwało zaledwie 1500, czego częściową przyczyną były marsze śmierci. Zum Vergleich: Im Juni 1944 waren nur 3% der insgesamt 37.600 Häftlinge Juden. Bis zum Jahresende wurden fast 50.000 Juden, 98% von ihnen waren Frauen, nach Stutthof deportiert. Damit wurden sie zur größten Häftlingsgruppe im Lager… Stutthof war überfüllt. Rasch verschlechterten sich die Lebensbedingungen. Die Juden wurden von den anderen Häftlingen getrennt und isoliert. Sie lebten unter primitiven Bedingungen in überfüllten Baracken ohne einfachste sanitäre Einrichtungen. Die Lebensmittelrationen waren unglaublich klein. Man errichtete eine Gaskammer zur gleichzeitigen Ermordung von 25 bis 30 Juden. Bis zum Januar 1945 waren bereits 9.400 Juden ermordet worden. Die letzten Monate jedoch waren am grausamsten. Beim ersten Todesmarsch im Januar 1945 wurden etwa 7.000 jüdische Frauen in Stutthof zurückgelassen. Nur 1.500 von ihnen überlebten den Krieg, auch weil es weitere Todesmärsche gab.
